Compositions by Alex Burnard
The original catalogue, which involved the sorting and listing of Dr Alex Burnard's manuscript scores of his musical compositions, was completed by Mr. Colin D. Watts on 11 February 1973. It was further updated with additions, corrections and annotations by Mr Gionni Di Gravio in November 1999. The works include all his compositions with Opus Numbers ranging from Op.1 to Op. 50 including orchestral, chamber, instrumental, vocal and choral works. Together with this are a number of minor works and sketches that have no opus numbers. The compositions date from 1918 to 1970.

Compositions by students of Dr Alex Burnard
Many of Alex Burnard's students dedicated a number of their compositions to their teacher. Many appear to be either the original manuscript score or copies of the original scores, with dedications. Most notable are those of Johannes Tall, who later became Professor emeritus at the Music School of the University of Michigan-Flint, as well as, John Ashe, Vladimir Sidorenko, Robert Bouffler and Charles Glenn.

Sound recordings
The collection includes rare sound recordings made by the Australian Broadcasting Commission between the years 1951 and 1956 of Burnard's musical compositions. These are, perhaps, the only sound recordings of his compositions in existence and include his Op.33 Song Cycle for Baritone (1952), Op.30 'The Answer' - Song for Soprano (1951), Op.31 No.1 Prelude Fanfare and Fugue (1949-1951) and Op.4 Variations on 'A Watchet Sailor' for piano (Dec 1926 - 22nd February 1927).Also in the collection is a spoken word interview conducted in 1946.

Writings
The collection contains the original typescript of Dr Burnard's text book on Harmony and Composition, dating from the 1930s, as well as copies of the two published editions of the work, in 1950 and 1965. Included are essays and lectures upon musical topics which he delivered in class or through public broadcasts on the ABC (1934 - 1943). Dr Burnard was a lover of literature and wrote many prose and poetical works thoughout his life, some of which he sought to have published under the title Selected Verse, Gay and Grave 1942 – 1968, but to no avail (1917 - 1970).
