novoimagery: Built in the 1860s by Edward Christopher Merewether 1820-1893, the suburb bears his name. At the time he was the general superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Co and owner of the Burwood Estate and had to negotiate with himself when the company wanted to mine beneath it. He also financed St Augustines church in Merewether and exploration into New Guinea where the Merewether river is also named after him shoetig: This house is still standing, has been used as a hospital, now in private hands as a residence once more (2011).

David Porter: Hillcrest Mothers' Hospital was a maternity hospital in Curry Street, Merewether that was run by the Salvation Army from 1933. Hillcrest Mothers' Hospital was the changed name for the Maryville Mothers' Hospital. Adoptions were arranged from Hillcrest. The hospital accommodated married as well as unmarried mothers. An article from 1952 stated that Hillcrest Mothers Hospital had accommodation for "16 married and 23 unmarried mothers". Married and unmarried mothers were accommodated in different sections of Hillcrest. Single mothers came to Hillcrest some months before their babies were due. In some cases, the hospital arranged for babies to be adopted. Other children born at Hillcrest were placed in Homes run by the Salvation Army. Hillcrest Mothers' Hospital closed in 1977.
