novoimagery: Built in the 1860s by Edward Christopher Merewether 1820-1893. The suburb bears his name. Now as for Mr Merewether at the time he was the general superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Co and as owner of the Burwood Estate he had to negotiate with himself when the company wanted to mine beneath it. He then became local director of the London Chartered Bank, was president of the Royal Geographical Society and in 1887 financed exploration in New Guinea where the Merewether River is named after him. He was president of the Australian Club, Sydney Lawn Tennis Club, vice president of the Belvedere Cricket Club. He also paid for the building of St Augustines church at Merewether, he was also a benefactor of many other causes before his death in 1893

Baldy McSpecs: The house was known as Hillcrest Maternity Hospital in 1954 and Yours Truly was born there. Out the front, on either side, were two stone lions. I remember playing on the lions when my brother was born here in 1957. I had to stay outside because children were not allowed to visit. The Matron was Leila Tanner and she lived at The Junction. She was fully occupied knitting while my mother was in labour, and when my mother said, "This is getting quite painful", Tanner replied, "It's okay, you'll get over it."

David Porter:Hillcrest Mothers' Hospital was a maternity hospital in Curry Street, Merewether that was run by the Salvation Army from 1933. Hillcrest Mothers' Hospital was the changed name for the Maryville Mothers' Hospital. Adoptions were arranged from Hillcrest. The hospital accommodated married as well as unmarried mothers. An article from 1952 stated that Hillcrest Mothers Hospital had accommodation for "16 married and 23 unmarried mothers". Married and unmarried mothers were accommodated in different sections of Hillcrest. Single mothers came to Hillcrest some months before their babies were due. In some cases, the hospital arranged for babies to be adopted. Other children born at Hillcrest were placed in Homes run by the Salvation Army. Hillcrest Mothers' Hospital closed in 1977.
