The Evening News (Sydney) on September 2, 1878 credits him with being the first man to discover coal at Wickham , boaring for Mr Hannell.
The Hendersons lived in Wallsend, William owning The Traveller's Rest Hotel , a 2 story wooden structure that incorporated the original Masonic Lodge Meeting Room. This hotel was later to be demolished and replaced by the Terminus Hotel on the same site. William was a publican when not boaring for coal. Retiring to live in Hamilton. James died early in life from what is believed to have been a respiratory disease related to his mining career.
