By: William Hanna31st Aug 2020 8:44AMThe miner 2nd from the left is James Henderson, who with his father William was one of the coal industry pioneers in the Newcastle region, boaring by hand fo locate coal deposits and then tendering to sink the shaft to it. The Evening News (Sydney) on September 2, 1878 credits him with being the first man to discover coal at Wickham , boaring for Mr Hannell.

The Hendersons lived in Wallsend, William owning The Traveller's Rest Hotel , a 2 story wooden structure that incorporated the original Masonic Lodge Meeting Room. This hotel was later to be demolished and replaced by the Terminus Hotel on the same site. William was a publican when not boaring for coal. Retiring to live in Hamilton. James died early in life from what is believed to have been a respiratory disease related to his mining career.
